It goes on and you can look it up, but we are not allowed to use more than two lines of any song. Notice the ent endings. The rapper, Special K, ended each accent with a word ending in ent ; this was dope. The song is called “The Body Rock” by the Treacherous Three. This is an enormous creative effort to celebrate oneself through art. It is the personal artistic equivalent to the signs black people wore that said, I AM SOMEBODY! during the civil rights movement.

What else must the most feared, marginalized, despised, and disenfranchised human do in order to snatch some much-needed self-esteem? Do we deserve anything? Is it ever Miller time for us?

A nurse I interviewed was earning eighty thousand dollars a year and decided that she wanted a fifty-thousand-dollar car. She said that she had worked long and hard and that she deserved it. I asked, Why do you think that your reward should be giving an automobile company fifty thousand dollars of your hard-earned money for something that is not worth fifty thousand dollars? She was looking for a way to show her accomplishments. This car would tell the world that she was no ordinary chick. It would tell the world that she is accomplished. It would be a celebration of her efforts and a rubber stamp for her achievements.

Well, the bragging and the rap lyrics are just a way some black men celebrate their existence or big themselves up. If no one believes that they are worth something, then they tell the world that they are worth more than they really are. The world already believes the lie that we ain’t shit, so then let me create another lie and hopefully you will be dumb enough to believe that too. Of course by now it has gotten out of hand, but it started out of hand.

Celebrating with symbols, exaggerated prose, poetry, and material possessions are some ways that folks try to build esteem. Diamonds, cars, furs, and homes are all things that tell the world who you are and how you live. And if you don’t have the cream to collect such things then you look to collect other things. And a lot of Brothers collect women. Brothers who are less educated and less financially secure will tend to go after and try to get with more women than those who are all that. I’ve seen homeless Brothers rap to black women and think they got a chance! When down and out the only challenge left is between your legs. If you can prove to the world that you can still “get bitches,” even without a job, then you are just as rich as them other niggas. The more women you get with, the more respect you get. You become a player, a broke player but a player nonetheless. And a broke player is the best player in the world, because the deck is stacked against him. The more women he can collect, the more celebrated he feels.
